The Golden Strand is at mile post 7 on the beach road. The beach road is indicated as State Road 12 and the street name is Virginia Dare Trail. Directions or addresses on the Outer Banks are given relative to the "mile post" or the distance south from the Wright Memorial Bridge. Traveling south on the main highway, US 158, continue past the fire house and the water tower at mile post 7. The next traffic light is First Street. Turn left on First Street and proceed 2 blocks to the beach road. The Golden Strand will be immediately ahead and to the right. So turn right onto the beach road and then left into our parking lot. Coming from the south, after you pass the Wright Brothers National Memorial on your left, watch for the traffic light at First Street and turn right toward the beach road. The Golden Strand is adjacent to the beach access at the end of First Street.
From the north, Rt 168 continues as NC Rt 168. Rt 168 becomes US 158 at Barco, NC. From the west, those avoiding the tunnels in the Norfolk area, proceed east from Elizabeth City on US 158 to Barco, NC. Rt 168 meets US 158 at Barco. Continue south on US 158 and it will take you across the Wright Memorial Bridge onto the Outer Banks. From the south, cross the bridges over Roanoke Island onto the Outer Banks and turn north onto US 158. Proceed 10 miles north. After you pass the Wright Brothers National Memorial on your left, watch for the traffic light at First Street and turn right to the beach road.
This eastern Virginia map shows the by-pass around Norfolk. From the Richmond area take I-64 to I-664 to Rt 168. Rt 168 is now an expressway/toll road all the way into North Carolina. The toll is $2.00. . From Norfolk or Virginia Beach, take I-64 east to the Rt 168 exit and follow the signs to Nags Head, Rt 168 south.
This regional map shows the Outer Banks relative to the Washington and Richmond area to the north and the Raleigh area to the west. From the Raleigh-Durham area, take either of 2 routes. From Rocky Mount, take the I-95 exit onto US 64. From Wilson, take the I-95 exit onto US 264. In both cases, proceed east toward Roanoke Island and cross the bridges onto the Outer Banks. . From Richmond, take I-64 east and exit onto I-664, the by-pass around the bridge-tunnel between Hampton and Norfolk. I-664 will tie into Rt 168 in Chesapeake. This is the new expressway from I-64/I-664 into North Carolina.
